History A little about me... Country of Origin: Germany History: Most experts do agree that the dachshund evolved in Europe and that the German people are responsible for much of the breed's early development. More than one hundred years of breeding went into developing the dachshund as a hunting dog in Germany. Some theories hold that the sculptured reliefs of the Tekel Dog on Egyptian tombs are ancestors of this breed. The very name of this loyal breed signifies its purpose ("dachs" meaning badger and "hund" meaning dog.) The authentic origin of the Dachshund as a breed can be traced to Germany during the years 1550-1850 when German foresters, gamekeepers, and sportsmen first selected their dogs because of their affinity to go underground and fearlessly fight the badger, a vicious, saber-clawed antagonist weighing anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds. Dachshunds have also been used to flush and retrieve game, including birds. The Dachshund first appeared in the United States between 1879 and 1885. It wasn’t until 1888 that the German Dachshund Club or Deutscher Teckelklub was founded to standardize the conformation of the breed. World War I and II almost spelled the end for the Dachshund. Anti German sentiment made it uncomfortable to own a Dachshund. After the wars, the Dachshund Club of America., Inc. carried out a successful educational campaign and the Dachshund has endured enormous popularity ever since. Traits: This little dog is low to the ground and long in body and well muscled. The Dachshund makes up for its small size in its devout loyalty and loud bark. An excellent watch dog, this breed is oftentimes agressive to strangers and other larger dogs. It is also sensitive to children and cats when not introduced at a young age.
