Leavenworth...a hidden gem

A small European-style village hidden in the great folds of the majestic Cascade Mountain Range, gives the feeling of being in Germany or Austria. Unique gift and specialty shops featuring wonderful European specialties, cozy sandwich shops  bakeries,  and enticing delicatessen with delicious and select cheeses, meats, along with many imported delicacies are part of the quaint ambiance of Leavenworth, Washington, known as the “Bavarian Village. ” Restaurants abound with variety of choices from European cuisine to world favorite, pizza. Wineries provide a palate pleasing assortment from locally grown grapes. This area holds the apple capital of the world and cherry and pear orchards bloom in profusion each spring.

Leavenworth proudly holds title of “festival town” with many scheduled throughout the year. January brings Icefest with many snow related activities. Springtime means Maifest with grand parade, music, street dancing and traditional May pole dance with colorful streamers. During Kinderfest in summer, children are treated to endless activities free of charge including face painting, balloons, bouncing on inflatable, cotton candy, popcorn and flavored snow cones. International Accordion Celebration follows and with warmer weather everyone enjoys a trip down the river by raft, kayak or tube. Autumn Leaf Festival, in its forty plus years, energizes everyone in attendance with huge parade. With leaves turning, Oktoberfest is enjoyed with tremendous music, food and dancing, followed by traditional German outdoor Christmas Market(Christkindlmarkt). December is busy with three week-ends of Christmas Lighting the largest festival of the year. Once you attend Christmas Lighting you will know why A&E Network named Leavenworth “Ultimate Holiday Town USA”

There is practically something going on each month, however if festivals are not your favorite activity, consider some downhill and cross country skiing, sledding and sleigh rides in winter. In spring, rafting, kayaking and tubing on the river begin and into summer, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and horseback riding are popular. Leavenworth Summer Theater presents outstanding drama for warm summer evening enjoyment and relaxation. Enjoy their signature performance of “The Sound of Music” held in the mountains. The “Bavarian Village” in fall is a photographer’s dream. A lifetime experience is to view amazing burst of autumn color in nearby Tumwater Canyon.
